Week 3: Seahawks young fast defense makes a statement

Defense Wins Games!

Question: Which NFL team gives up 22 ppg, 318 total yards, 218 passing yards, 99.6 rush yards, and is holding opposing QB’s to 12-41 on 3rd downs on average?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

Question: Which NFL team is ranked 10th in total defense?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

My point to these questions was a fairly simple one. Outside the confusion surrounding the offense, the defense as a whole, has been the lone bright spot the Seahawks can point to as being a success in the early part of this season.

The interesting thing about this defense is there isn’t that one standout/star player. Which as we know, doesn’t seem to conform into today’s NFL model. But what the Seahawks have managed to assemble, is a group of guys who seem to do the little things right. They don’t over pursue on tackles, and they never seem to be out of position in passing situations.

The Seahawks just play sound fundamental, ball hawking defense.

Just ask Kevin Kolb how easy it was to face the Seahawks defense in front of the energizing Century Link crowd. All day long defensive coordinator Gus Bradley threw multiple looks at Kolb in an attempt to disrupt his timing routes by forcing the Cardinals QB into making mistakes.

None more evident then Kolb’s 25-39 completions to attempts, and his 3-13 on 3rd down conversions.

This seems to be a reoccurring trend for the Seahawks defense. So far in the early going the defense is holding opposing QB’s to 29% on 3rd down conversions (12-41). Which is good for 3rd in the NFL.

But moreover, the Seahawks are only allowing 22.3 ppg, and 318 total yards per game on average, which ranks 12th and 10th in those respective categories.

The fact remains that the Seahawks are keeping QB’s off the field, and keeping the team in games. As the offense continues it struggles trying to get on the same page, the defense looks to be in mid-season form.

It’s true that the NFC West could be had again with a losing record.

If the Seahawks have any visions of post-season play they will be counting on their defense to be the one to carry them there.

While the D has been looking good, it’s not like they’ve been going up offensive juggernauts, either…

That is a very good point. Even though they got Rothlisberger in week 2, Pittsburgh didn’t open up their entire playbook. This week vs Atlanta will be their first real test against a Super Bowl caliber offense.
