Sacramento State vs. OSU – Week 1 Recap

Oregon State – Week 1 College Football Game Summary

Well, the burning question all offseason was what would Oregon State’s offense look like without the Rodgers brothers?

I think we found out, as Football Championship Subdivision’s Sacramento State  Hornets, stunned the Beavers 29-28 in overtime on Saturday.

The Hornets held the Beavers to just 136 yards of total offense in the first half and held a 14-3 lead heading into the lock room at the break.

After knotting it up at 21 with eight minutes remaining, Oregon State started the overtime period with a 17-yard touchdown run from true freshman Malcolm Agnew, his third of the contest.

But the Hornets answered back, countering the Beavers’ touchdown on Jeff Fleming’s  6 -yard touchdown pass to Brandyn Reed. The Hornets then decided to go for the victory, and then  the two connected again on the ensuing two-point conversion pass.

Sacramento State, although, ranked 24th in the FCS, had lost their last three games against Pac-12 teams by a combined 133-27, including a 52-17 blowout to Stanford last season.
But the Hornets simply outplayed the Beavers for the most part, especially Fleming who tossed for 257 yards and three scores.

His performance trumped Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz’s, who didn’t play in the second half after going just 11-for-22 for 87 yards with one interception in the first 30 minutes.

In the meantime, the loss snapped Oregon State’s home opener win streak at nine games.

To cut the Beavers some slack, they did field eight true freshmen in Saturday’s contest that set a new team record for a single-season, surpassing the seven that played in 1997, head coach Mike Riley’s first season.

However, excuses doesn’t win games and  this weekend’s test against No. 8 Wisconsin who destroyed UNLV last week, could  be the poison arrow to send  the Beavers season into a downward spiral.
