The Howard Bison are certainly no powerhouse but despite their poor record they have played better than expected. Tonight they take on the Oregon State Beavers.
Howard Bison (3-7) vs Oregon State Beavers (7-2)
Thursday December 15
Gill Coliseum – Corvallis, OR
Moneyline: No Lines Out Yet (As of presstime)
Spread: Oregon State –
Against the two best teams on their schedule, Georgetown and Old Dominion, they were able to hang around more than anyone would have expected.
In fact they were leading ODU by 5 at the half before succumbing in the second period. This team relies on solid defensive principles and is holding opponents to less than 40% shooting.
They have to defend because this team struggles to score points. Their best player and leading scorer and rebounder is forward Mike Phillips.
His scoring average is down slightly from last year and he really should be increasing his attempts because they don’t get much scoring any place else.
Phillips gets help up front from Alphonso Leary. The sophomore centre is rail thin but stands 6’11 and can be effective. He has to stay out of foul trouble because the Bison little other size they can put out there.
They may be the President’s favourite team but nobody else is really expecting much from Oregon State this season. This is a middle of the pack team in the PAC 12 and that conference has been pretty brutal this year. In fact, right now there is not even a single member in the AP Top 25.
The Beavers are 7-2 right now but they might not win another 7 games the rest of the season.
Still, the Beavers should have little trouble with the mighty Bison from Howard. Look for leading scorer Jared Cunningham to have a big day as he has already topped 30 points twice this season.
He is best when he doesn’t force three point shots because he is hitting them at a very low rate.
The Beavers have a burgeoning player in frosh centre Eric Moreland. He averages almost 7 rebounds a game in just 16 minutes of action. This team needs to collect wins when they can.
Oregon State has used the same starting lineup in all nine games this season with Ahmad Starks, Jared Cunningham, Devon Collier, Joe Burton and Angus Brandt. The Beavers used 11 different starting lineups last season and five through the first 10 games.
Score Prediction: Oregon State 74 – Howard 59
