Oregon may have the more accomplished football history, but there’s no comparison between the Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers basketball program. The Beavers have a dynamite NCAA Division-I history.
They’ve done so much over the years that it’s hard to fit on one page!
Oregon State Beavers basketball Thru the Years
The Oregon State Beavers are the 15th-winningest college basketball program of all time. As you could expect, amassing enough wins to crack the top 15 means you have to be a winning school year after year.
The Beavers have been just that, winning their conference title 20 times since 1909. They’re also a regular at the NCAA Tournament, having appeared 16 times, making the Sweet Sixteen seven times, the Elite Eight eight times and the Final Four twice.
Arguably, the Beavers’ most famous season was 1980-81, when they were known as the Orange Express. During Beaver star Steve Johnson’s last season with the team, they went 26-2 and held the national No. 1 ranking for 25 weeks.
They entered March Madness as a No. 1 seed but suffered a heartbreaking 50-48 loss to Kansas State.
Oregon State is hungry for a return to the NCAA Tournament after a 21-year hiatus.
With all the Beavers have accomplished over their history, they deserve it!
Oregon State has produced NBA greats like Gary Payton, A.C. Green, Brent Barry and a total of 24 players who have gone on to play in the NBA.
In Terry Baker, they have the only person to win the Heisman Trophy in football and play in the Final Four in basketball in the same year (1962). Beavers also hold college basketball’s all-time record for victories over one opponent, having beaten their hated rival Oregon 183 times.
Here’s hoping the Beavers return to prominence soon! Not…
