Ducks vs. Colorado Buffaloes Week 9 game balls & stats

Over before it began

There’s really no sensitive way to put this, but the Colorado Buffaloes are one of the worst teams in all of college football.

The Oregon Ducks opened up the first quarter with another dominant performance, and by the time the first half had come to a close, the team from Eugene had put on a show with a 56-0 lead.

This contest was never in question, as efficiency was the name of the game for the Ducks this weekend.

Offensive Game Ball

The entire Oregon offense was as efficient as can be this weekend in their 70-13 routing of the buffaloes. Marcus Mariota was crisp in his passes, De’Anthony Thomas was as explosive as ever and the team had nine receivers catch balls against Colorado this weekend.

Kenjon Barner, however, did what he does best, which this season has been breaking games open very, very early.

Kenjon Barner wasn’t the workhorse against the Buffaloes that he’s been all year, but big plays in both the rushing and receiving games made it nearly impossible for the opposing defense to get a hand on him. He even had a 77-yard touchdown run early in the game, but the play was called back because of a penalty.

Barner ended the game with 150 all-purpose yards on just 11 touches—in the first half—and it begs the question, where would the senior be in the Heisman race if he just played in the second halves of games?

Defensive Game Ball

The entire Oregon defense deserves credit for their performance against the Buffaloes this week, but it was Isaac Dixon and Derrick Malone who forced Colorado’s quarterback to throw his only interception of the contest.

The game was well in hand when Colorado threw the ball away, but Isaac Dixon and Derrick Malone brought the crowd back to life with one of the more unique interceptions of the entire season.

Dixon popped the ball out of Colorado’s possession with a big hit, and Malone took full advantage by jumping in and snatching the ball away; but not before it went flying through the air after being bobbled around in entertaining fashion.

Special Teams Game Ball

De’Anthony Thomas made the special teams play of the season when he returned a punt in the second quarter for a 73-yard touchdown.

The ball bounced short and bobbled past Thomas, in what was, quite frankly, a play that Thomas should have simply left alone. But if anybody is going to turn the mundane into spectacular, it’s going to be Thomas.

After picking up the ball, Thomas ran backward, broke a tackle and changed directions. He would run to the sideline on the play, but after getting stuck in the corner and shimmy-shaking his way out of trouble, there was nothing but green grass between him and the six points he would score just a few seconds later.

Anybody who’s ever compared Thomas to Reggie Bush was drooling over this play, but Avery Patterson also deserves huge recognition for making the block that made this incredible play possible.
