Week 4 Analysis: Ducks defense still looks suspect

State Of Ducks Football

Last week I asked the question, just how good are the Oregon Ducks?

Well offensively I think this past weekend we found out as the two-time defending Pac-10 champion, won its 13th consecutive conference game, blowing open a 35-3 lead en route to rolling over the Arizona Wildcats 56-31 in Week 4.

The Ducks fired up their lightning-quick offense while LaMichael James proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is one, if not the best candidate, for this year’s Heisman trophy by ripping off a school record 288 yards.
But James wasn’t done, as he also broke the Oregon mark for career rushing touchdowns with two scores on the day.

State Of Ducks Football

All but the last of the Ducks’ seven touchdown drives lasted less than three minutes, an amazing statistic.

However, with all that offensive firepower, Oregon’s defense is still a big question mark, and this past weekend’s game in Tucson showed the team’s Achilles.

The Ducks’ defense surrendered 480 yards including 398 via the Wildcats passing attack.

Oregon’s defenders appeared to be on their heels at the end of the second quarter and beginning of the second half , allowing the Wildcats to score three consecutive touchdowns.

While Oregon doesn’t have a truly meaningful date left on its schedule until it visits Stanford on Nov. 12., Chip Kelly needs to be concerned about his defensive unit, the same one that yielded 40 points to LSU, and 516 total yards to the Nevada Wolf Pack in a Week 2.

While offense is flashy and wins games, defense wins championships, as the Ducks learned from the Auburn Tigers last year who held them to just 19 points.

Nowhere close to its nation-leading 49-point average during the season.
