Speculation Time: Is there a QB Controversy in Oregon?

Thomas vs. Bennett

There are some rumblings of a QB controversy in Oregon after starter Darron Thomas was replaced by backup Bryan Bennett after halftime against Washington State in their 43-28 win.

At halftime of that game the Ducks only had a 5-point lead over the Cougars and the switch was made mainly because Thomas did not look like himself and he threw 2 INT.

It was Thomas’  first game back from a knee injury and in his absence Bennett played well combining to go 17/32 for 266 yards with 4 TD and 0 INT and rushed for 159 yards in the 3 games he was in for Thomas.

After the win over WSU Oregon head coach Chip Kelly stated, “We just felt Bryan gave us a better chance in the second half.”

Well, duh, with Bennett in the Ducks scored 28 points including scoring 21 in the 3rd quarter when he had 2 TD passes.

Do We have a QB controversy in Eugene?

Even though Bennett gave the Ducks the spark they needed in the WSU game there does not seem to be a full blown QB controversy in Eugene.

The staff has come out and said that Thomas is still THE guy under center for the Ducks.

When Oregon offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich was asked who the starting QB would be next week he stated, “One hundred percent, it’s Darron Thomas.”

Kelly did not come right out and say the same, but said, “I don’t have to answer that question.

But I know who he is. I’ll play 17 quarterbacks if it’s gonna help us win…. We can do this dance all day long if you want.”

So, it looks as if Thomas will be the starter this week and he will have to play well since Oregon has their 2 biggest games of the season coming up facing 6-2 Washington and 8-0 and 4th ranked Stanford.

Also, whoever is under center will not have much fan support since both the Washington and Stanford game are on the road.

The Ducks have shown how deep they are at the RB and QB position, as the Ducks won all their games when they did not have Thomas and RB LaMichael James.

Its going to be a fun two weeks in Oregon.
