Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon Ducks Bowl Handicapping Preview
It is interesting that Oregon has not won the Rose Bowl since way back in 1917.
This game may be a shootout with the Ducks having the 3rd highest scoring team in the nation and Wisconsin having the 5th highest scoring team.
Not only is this Rose Bowl a match up of 2 dynamic offenses, but also a match up featuring last season’s Heisman finalist in Oregon RB LaMichael James and this season’s Heisman finalist in Wisconsin RB Montee Ball.
Both teams come into this BCS bowl game after winning inaugural conference title games with Oregon beating UCLA 49-31 in the Pac 12 championship game and Wisconsin beating Michigan State 42-39 in the Big 10 championship game.
While both Oregon and Wisconsin have great offenses the Badgers have the edge on the defensive side of the ball, as the Badgers have the nation’s 8th ranked defense while the Ducks rank 59th.
However, both teams are pretty even, in terms of rankings, in run defense.
We know about the rushing offenses of both teams, but the passing offense is also key, especially for the Badgers. Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson hit on 72.5% of his passes on the season and had 31 TD and only 4 INT.
WR’s Nick Toon and Jared Abbrederis each averaged over 14 yards per reception on the season and Oregon only ranks 82nd in the nation in pass defense.
Ducks’ QB Darron Thomas also had a solid season with 30 TD and 6 INT and he has a legit WR corps, but unlike Oregon Wisconsin has one of the best pass defenses in the nation ranking 3rd.
Jason’s Rose Bowl Prediction
One key match up in this game will be the great pass rush of Oregon facing the mammoth offensive line of Wisconsin. The Ducks ranked 3rd in the nation in sacks and even though the Badgers O-line is huge they gave up 23 sacks on the season.
Oregon will need to pressure Russell in the pocket and not allow him time to find his receivers.
James led the nation averaging 149.6 rushing yards per game and RB Kenjon Barner rushed for 909 yards and these 2 will be too much for the Wisconsin D to handle.
I think this will be a high scoring game, but unlike last season the Ducks will end their season with a BCS bowl win.
