WSU Cougars vs. Oregon Ducks Week 9 Handicapping Preview

Ducks 6-1 vs Cougars 3-4

Oregon is coming off a blowout win and while WSU has lost 3 in a row the Ducks cannot take this game lightly, with the Cougars have a good passing offense, as they look forward to their next 2 games facing both Washington and Stanford on the road.

WSU looks to double their win total from last season, but don’t look for that to happen in this game against a Ducks’ team that has legit BCS bowl aspirations and is the 4th highest scoring team in the nation.

Washington State has the nation’s 52nd ranked run defense, but they have given up a ton of passing yards in their last 2 games. Still, the run defense is more important for the Cougars in this game facing an Oregon rushing offense that ranks 4th in the nation.

Oregon head coach Chip Kelly has not stated if RB LaMichael James or QB Darron Thomas will be back for this game, but does a deep Oregon team need them? Since James went out with an elbow injury backup RB Kenjon Barner has rushed for over 110 yards in his last 2 games with 3 TD. Last week in the 45-2 win over Colorado the Ducks racked up 371 rushing yards.

Expect the Ducks to dominate the ground game and light up the scoreboard at home this Saturday. I mean, WSU has given up 88 points in their last 2 games and gave up a season-high 551 yards in last Saturday’s 44-21 loss to Oregon State.

For the Cougars to have any chance to pull off the huge upset, or even make the game close, they will have to score a lot of points with their passing offense, which ranks 10th in the nation.

WSU QB Marshall Lobbestael will get the start after Jeff Tuel suffered a shoulder in injury in the Cougars last game. He has 3 legit WR’s in Marquess Wilson (109.0 yards per game) Isaiah Barton and Jared Karstetter

and they will be facing a Oregon pass defense that ranks 59th in the nation.

Lobbestael will have to carry the offense since the Cougars only rank 91st in the nation in rushing yards per game.

Oregon has beaten WSU in 4 straight games.

WSU has a tall task in this game not just to win, but not to get blown out. However, don’t look for them to avoid the blowout against Oregon in their house this Saturday afternoon.
