Oregon Ducks (19-8) vs Oregon State Beavers (15-12)
Sunday February 26
Gill Coliseum – Corvallis, OR
The Oregon Ducks split last weekend on a difficult trip to Northern California. This surprising team is tied for fourth in the PAC 12 standings and is just one win away from 20 – a number that usually gets the selection committee’s attention. Oregon State won the earlier meeting between these two on the road so you can bet the Ducks are looking to even the score.
This team has proven it can win on the road in conference with five road wins already to their credit.
It seems like the Ducks are winning by simply playing good smart basketball. They are not blessed with any singularly brilliant talent but in E.J. Singler, Devoe Joseph, Garret Sim and Olu Ashaolu they have a core group that makes the right decision more often than not.
When other team’s beat themselves they take advantage. Its not sexy but it works.
If coach Dana Altman can increase the talent level this team can continue to be one on the rise.
The high scoring ways of the Oregon State Beavers haven’t led to many wins since conference play began.
They are just 5-10 and have lost the last 4 in a row heading into this one. I still find it hard to believe but this team is 8th in the nation in scoring at just under 80 points per game. I am not really sure how they are doing it.
That is because the cast surrounding leading scorer Jared Cunningham is nothing much to fear really.
Cunningham might be the best player the Beavers have had since a certain guard named Gary Payton – it has been a long time since “The Glove” was on campus. Cunningham averages 18 points per game, one of four players in double figures.
He is a true scorer with a pretty polished game but he still turns the ball over too much. Last time out he had his worst PAC 12 game of the year with just 10 points. But in the Beavers upset of the Ducks in January he hit for 27.
Without another big game their chances are slim.
Score Prediction: Oregon 81 – Oregon State 77
