The growing trend at the University of Oregon: improving sports teams. Just as the football team has enjoyed its best success in recent years, the basketball team has become more relevant than ever in the new millennium.
Of Oregon’s 10 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, five have come since 2000. Oregon has college basketball fever!
Oregon Ducks Basketball Thru The Years
The storied Oregon Ducks basketball program debuted in 1902 and notched its first victory in 1907.Oregon basketball really established itself in 1939 during the “Tall Firs” season.
The Oregon players were so big compared to the other national competition that they were dubbed the Tall Firs during the 1939 NCAA tournament – the first ever. Oregon became the first team ever to win the NCAA Tournament that year.
That’s right – Oregon was the original March Madness champ.
Oregon didn’t reach the Elite Eight again until 1960 and not until 2002 after that but the last decade has been kind to the Ducks. They made the Elite eight in both 2002 and 2007 and won the Pac-10 tournament in 2003 and 2007.
Among the most prominent Ducks alumni appearing in the NBA: Aaron Brooks, Luke Ridnour and Terrelle Brandon.
Currently, the Ducks are in a transitional phase, breaking in a new head coach.
But they flew north of .500 last year and look ready to make another run at the NCAA Tournament!
