MLB Matchup Insight Rangers vs M’s Game 1
Happy Monday, Happy Felix Day. Not sure it’s happy. King Felix faces a nemesis in the Rangers, who beat Hernandez all four times they faced him last year.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Yu Darvish (6-1, 2.60 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (3-3, 3.02 ERA)
The Texas Rangers have slowed a little bit but still have a commanding 5 game lead in the American League West.
They took two out of three on their visit to in-state inter-league rival Houston and continue a road trip with a visit to the Pacific Northwest.
The road has been kind to Texas this season. They are 15-7 as a visitor, good for second best in the American League and significantly better than their home record.
This is a honey of a pitching matchup Monday night. If you take away Yu Darvish’s first MLB inning he has been as good as advertised. The Rangers have won all but one of his starts and he is mowing batters down at a rate of better than one per inning.
At the dish Josh Hamilton has cooled of late but this is still the top scoring team in the majors.
The Mariners went into Colorado over the weekend and came away with a surprising sweep.
Their bats came alive in the mile high city and they got a wonderful pitching performance from Kevin Millwood in the opener – it was his first shutout in nearly nine years.
Now the Rangers come to town but the Mariners have to like their chances to continue winning with ace King Felix on the hill.
Felix Hernandez is entering Monday off of back to back poor outings – a rarity.
Both games were on the road, where he has struggled this season. Oddly he has made 6 of his nine starts away from Safeco. In those three starts at home he has an ERA under 1 with a strikeout to walk ratio of 27-6. In short he has been unhittable.
He might have to be for this Mariners team to beat Darvish and the Rangers Monday night.
