MLB Matchup Insight M’s vs. Rangers

It made a lot of headlines in the offseason when the Seattle Mariners traded a pitcher with a great future in Michael Pineda to the New York Yankees in exchange for slugging catching prospect Jesus Montero.

*MLB Matchup Report*

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Hector Noesi (2011: 2-2, 4.47 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yu Darvish (2011 in Japan: 19-6, 1.44 ERA)

It just isn’t that often trades like that occur, especially dealing young pitching in a league hungry for it.

Lost amidst the headlines was that Seattle acquired pitcher Hector Noesi, a pitcher good enough to make the Mariners rotation even though he has little Major League experience.

The Mariners have gotten off a to very good 3-1 start, taking advantage of the Oakland A’s and the wacky scheduling – Felix Hernandez has already started 2 of their first 4 games. Noesi is a big question mark as most of his experience with New York was in relief.

It is not a lot to go on but as Yankee he never gave up a run to Texas – just 1.1 innings against last year’s American League winners.

There is a huge amount of anticipation for this one as it marks the beginning of the Yu Darvish era in Texas.

On a very good team he was the biggest off-season acquisition and is looking to prove that he was worth a huge investment in posting fee and salary.

Pitchers from Japan haven’t fared too well in the Majors to this point but Darvish is younger, if not also more accomplished, than those before him.

Texas is being featured on Sunday Night Baseball and is looking to take the rubber match of their opening series against Chicago.

The White Sox might have exposed that the changes Texas made to their bullpen – moving Neftali Feliz out and Joe Nathan in – might not be for the best.

Nathan gave up a run in the 9th to cost the team a victory against Chicago Saturday night. Everyone will forget about that if Darvish pitches to expectation on Monday.

Trends: Over is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings in Texas.
SEA are 18-44 in the last 62 meetings in Texas.
