MLB Interleague Matchup Insight M’s vs Padres Game 2
The Padres took game one of this series on Friday night 9-5. Kevin Millwood didn’t exactly have his best stuff, despite an early Mariners lead they couldn’t hang on and gave up a ton of run in the 5th inning to blow this one wide open.
Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres
Saturday June 23
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Moneyline: Seattle -135, San Diego +125
Pitching Matchup: Felix Hernandez, RHP, 4-5, 3.52 ERA vs. Jason Marquis, RHP, 3-6, 6.08 ERA
An Interleague series between last place teams is hardly something to get excited about. Seattle has been playing worse as the season progresses showing no signs of any sort of competitive fire.
Strangely this team has a much better record on the road than at home.
Petco offers another pitchers park which might be trouble as the M’s biggest drawback is their inability to score runs.
King Felix seems to be caught up in the morass that is the Mariners this season. He hasn’t always put up great records but he has usually risen above with great peripherals. If things hold this season he will post his highest ERA since 2007.
In his last outing he was very sharp against San Francisco but he lost to these same Padres when they visited Seattle just a couple of weeks ago.
The Padres had the worst record in the Majors heading into Friday night (yes even worse than the Cubs).
However, unlike the Mariners there seems to be more optimism in SoCal as they have some promising players like Yonder Alonso and Carlos Quentin has come back from injury with a vengeance.
They are not going to challenge to make the playoffs but you can see how they might one day.
First they have to rid themselves of starter Jason Marquis – a stopgap if there ever was one. Through 10 outings he has an ERA over 6 and batters are hitting .333 against him.
However, in his last start out he was able to stifle the vaunted Rangers attack piling up 10 strikeouts while taking the loss.
He also pitched when these two teams previously squared off and was effective with 6 scoreless innings. Maybe he is not as useless as I think (doubtful).
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Seattle 4 – San Diego 1
