Gambling Insight M’s vs Angels Game 1
Los Angeles kicks off a 10-game homestand against Seattle. They get the Mariners Felix on Happy Felix Day. Will it be? Hernandez fell to 6-10 in 26 career starts against the Angels on May 26, when he surrendered five runs in six innings.
Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Friday August 10
Angels Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Moneyline: Seattle -110, Los Angeles -110
PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (10-5, 2.63 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ervin Santana (5-10, 5.83)
The Mariners are back to losing heading into Friday’s series opener with the Angels on a 4 game losing streak (swept at Baltimore). Only once in those four games did they score more than 2 runs which is the story of their 2012 season.
This team has the worst OPS in the Majors and Kyle Seager is leading the club in home runs. Sure they play in a pitcher’s park but their offensive output this season is laughable.
How much they score is sometimes irrelevant when Felix Hernandez takes the hill. The righty is enjoying his best stretch of the season with a sub 2 ERA and a perfect 6-0 record over his last 10 starts.
He has quietly crept his way into the AL Cy Young race.
He is second in the AL in innings pitched and tied for first in shutouts. He has struggled against LA at times including a home loss to the Angels earlier this season.
The Angels might be the most talented team in the American League but right now they are finding themselves in a dog fight with Oakland – and they are losing. Both of these teams might be able to qualify for the playoffs but the Angels would be best served to put that talent to work down the stretch.
Thanks to the deadly combo of Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo they have a dangerous offense even with a mediocre season from Albert Pujols (by his standards).
L.A. will look to snap a 2 game losing skid (to Oakland) with their weakest link on the mound. Ervin Santana has always flashed talent and inconsistency but this year would mark his biggest flop to date.
He has the lowest ERA among qualified AL starters (by a nice margin).
In a home game against Seattle in June he was touched for 7 runs while giving up 6 BBs in just 4.2 innings.
Lucky for Seattle it wasn’t the departed Ichiro who did the damage.
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Seattle 4 – Los Angeles 2
