Weekly Seattle Mariners recap: Series pitching vs.Tampa Bay, N.Y. & KC

Playing Catch Up

The Seattle Mariners have played well since the All Star break. Despite some of the lingering offensive woes, this team has managed to slowly right the ship.

With any luck, these Mariners may be competitive sooner than we all thought.

(Not this season, so get that thought quickly out of your head)

Let’s hope this 7-3 record is a sign of things to come. Although they took on Kansas City, the Mariners also played well against the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.

They are both playoff caliber teams.

I like what I’m seeing so far this second half.

How’d they do this week?

The rotation has been re-tooled again as it is that time of year again. Pitching staffs transform themselves this time of year with injuries and prospect call ups and even trades.

So imagine my surprise to see Kevin Millwood come out of the All Star break as the first starter to usher in the season’s second half.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners

King Felix is all smiles after starting the second half of the season 3-0…and finally getting run support

Many people around the league and in broadcasting call the Mariners the best defensive team in baseball.

It is holding true, because this Mariners rotation is giving up quite a few hits each game with little to no repercussions. The defense is bailing their pitcher out and keeping the team in games.

With the pitching hanging in there so far, it seems hitting has started to show slight improvements.

Take Felix Hernandez‘s record.

He’s rattled off 3 straight wins out of the break, largely in part to finally getting some run support.

Hisashi Iwakuma has performed about average since cracking the rotation and the time Beavan spent in Tacoma seems to have tamed him a little bit.

Kevin Millwood is pitching like a skilled veteran now and Felix and Vargas are both still bringing it every outing.

Last turn through the rotation:

  • Kevin Millwood: 5 innings, 10 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk, 2 strike outs
  • Felix Hernandez: 8 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 3 strike outs
  • Hisashi Iwakuma: 6 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 7 strike outs
  • Jason Vargas: 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 run (unearned), 3 walks, 5 strike outs
  • Blake Beavan: 8 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, o walks, 5 strike outs

This week:

  • Kevin Millwood: 7 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 5 strike outs
  • Felix Hernandez: 7 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 4 strike outs
  • Hisashi Iwakuma: 5 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 3 strike outs
  • Jason Vargas: 8 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 3 walks, 5 strike outs
  • Blake Beavan:  6 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 strike outs
