Mariners: Seattle signs general manager Jack Zduriencik to long-term extension
The Seattle Mariners have signed GM Jack Zduriencik to a contract extension. Terms were not disclosed. (Keeping w/ M’s policy?!?)
While it’s bad news for writers like me, who will have to continue struggling to spell his name, the move is a positive one for the M’s.
Zduriencik is widely credited for injecting youthful talent back into the Mariners’ farm system. He took over in 2008 and guided Seattle from 61 wins to 85 in his first full campaign, earning MLB Executive of the Year honors.
Seattle fans shouldn’t let the team’s woeful record deceive them about Jack Z’s effectiveness.
This is the man who successfully banished Miguel Bautista, Richie Sexson, Adrian Beltre, Carlos Silva, Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Lopez from the Emerald City.
Talk about dead weight.
Zduriencik also drafted Dustin Ackley and traded for Justin Smoak. He’s worked hard to change the team’s identity to a one of a youthful team with a bright future. It took him a few seasons just to right the wrongs of previous GM Bill Bavasi.
Only now are we just starting to see how Zduriencik will shape the team going forward.
Kudos to the M’s for making the right move and retaining their underrated general manager.
