Matchup Insight A’s vs Mariners Game 2
The Seattle Mariners dropped a tough one in game of this home series against the Oakland Athletics. Erasmo Ramirez finally threw a gem, a 3-hitter, and the team lost 1-0.
Not a good way to start a 10-game homestand, but there’s 9 more games to make it up!

Oakland A’s (35-38) vs Seattle Mariners (31-43)
Tuesday June 26
Safeco Field – Seattle, WA
Moneyline: Seattle -112, Oakland +102
Travis Blackley, LHP (1-2, 3.89 ERA) vs. Jason Vargas, LHP (7-7, 4.66 ERA)
Oakland has been playing surprisingly well of late. Like so many AL teams they were really enjoying the Interleague vibe, winning 8 of 9 against the Rockies, Padres and Dodgers before stumbling against the cross-town Giants.
They have made themselves respectable in the AL West which is seemingly all the A’s try and do.
To be honest, it is actually pretty impressive because this team is really light on talent.
The A’s are competing with a light hitting lineup and a top ten staff (ERA – 9th). Starter Travis Blackley has been pretty solid since moving to the rotation and his last outing was by far his best – 8IP and 6Ks in a win against the Dodgers.
Not bad for a guy who has already been released by one team this season and hadn’t pitched in the Majors for 5 years before that.
There is risk there but there could be some reward given the opponent.
Seattle is continuing to sink the AL West and overall standings and quite frankly this is probably the worst team in the Majors.
They are the rare AL team to struggle in Interleague play going 1-5 against the lowly Padres while also struggling against Arizona and San Francisco.
I think I write this every time but it still remains to be true – I just don’t see how this team is going to get any better (some guys are actually over-performing right now).
Jason Vargas is 1-0 against Oakland this year and will be looking to right the ship after three straight losses during the most recent of which he gave up 10 earned runs including 5 homers (very rare).
In fact, he hasn’t given up less than 3 runs in a start since May 9 so maybe this is a sweet spot to tag the underdog.
The M’s lineup is pitiful and it seems that Ichiro Suzuki is not going to have the kind of bounce back season the brass was hoping for.
O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: Oakland 7 – Seattle 4
