Matchup Insight Yankees vs M’s Game 2
New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners
Tuesday July 24
Safeco Field – Seattle, WA
Moneyline: Seattle -120, New York +110
PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (4-3, 5.37 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (8-5, 2.82)
The Yankees were surprising losers over the weekend dropping all four games at Oakland.
Their remedy – to travel up the coast to Seattle and trade for the Mariners signature player Ichiro Suzuki. Kind of a surprising move, but with outfielder Brett Gardner out for the season I guess they didn’t want to take any chances.
Rather than pay a song for a pitcher they went and grabbed a player not even the rumour mill was churning about.
They have another ex-Mariner taking the hill in Freddy Garcia. Garcia enjoyed his best years with the M’s but hasn’t given the Yankees much this season after surprising last year. He has been a bit sharper of late and prefers the road to home – anything that keeps the ball in the park is a help to him at this stage.
He rarely goes deep into game anymore but they are going to need to get some innings from him as their bullpen is a little ragged after Oakland.
The Mariners are having another tough year but you would never have thought they would trade Ichiro. They acquired a couple of arms no one is all that excited about for probably the second most popular player in franchise history – and sadly, still their leading hitter, even though he was batting just .261.
This team was already one of the worst offensive teams in the league and things are going to sink further.
Despite all that Seattle is still a slight favourite with Felix Hernandez dealing. Hernandez has been superb his last 7 starts, giving one or no runs 6 times and only 8 runs total over a span of 49 innings.
At home for the year he has been spectacular too with a scant 2.21 ERA.
Nobody is talking much about the Mariners or the “King” but he is leading the majors in punchouts this season and can dominate any lineup.
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Seattle 3 – New York 2
