mariners

Moments in time…The Seattle Mariners week that was

M’s back stateside

This past week was about as weird as any that I have ever witnessed in baseball. Two of three opening nights have now been completed, as well as the second round of Cactus League play.

Thousands of miles of travel, and multiple time zone and customs changes, the Seattle Mariners are finally back on American soil, ready to take the AL West by storm.

For a roundup of all the action, I give you my top 10!

10. Sunday off

For the first time in my life, or at least that I can remember that is, the Mariners have a non weather related Sunday off. This schedule I know is messing with the players minds, but what about us fans? Easter Sunday and no baseball?

WTH Selig!?

9. Vargas goes back to back

Another first, though I know it has happened before, but I just can’t place it, is M’s starting pitcher Jason Vargas going back-to-back in games two and three of the Oakland series.

What arm strength and stamina he must have. Oh wait, that’s right, games two and three were eight days apart.

8. Do these games count now?

Like I said before, this season’s schedule has been quite different than in years past. We open the season, then we play four more spring training games, then we open the season again.

And, we get another season opener this Friday!

7. Small ball back again

There’s nothing better than being right, or wait, there’s nothing better than having your predictions, that you have in writing, come true. On Friday, the M’s did exactly what I said they were capable of with their new lineup.

Score runs with speed.

6. Stiff upper neck

Everybody hates when an injury occurs to a starter, except that one player who gets to make his Major League debut because of it. Congrats Munenori Kawasaki on making it to the Show!

Shawn Kelly

Eric Wedge decided there was no room for veteran reliever Shawn Kelly

5. Who’s on third?

With the injury to starting LF Mike Carp, Mariners skipper Eric Wedge had to come up with a new lineup on the double. By placing the speedy Chone Figgins out in left field, this left the starting 3B job open for Kyle Seager.

And he didn’t disappoint in Friday nights game. A few hits, with a couple RBIs, I think he enjoys seeing his name on the scorecard. Alex Liddi must be fuming!

4. Is this some kind of sick joke?

This must be exactly what OF Carlos Pegeuro must have been thinking last week. Again, with the injury to LF Mike Carp, it looked like Pegeuro was going to make the final 25 man roster, only to be optioned to Tacoma the same day he goes 4-5 with 3 RBIs.

Oh how baseball can be so cruel.

3. Another one bites the dust

Eric Wedge decided there was no room for veteran reliever Shawn Kelly on his major league roster, at least for now. In news that Kelly must have loved, he got the slip, and will start the season with the Tacoma Rainiers.

2. Oakland’s butterfingers help M’s

Two plays in a row in Friday night’s win, the Oakland A’s outfielders bobbled transfers of mitt to hand, resulting in a run. Figgins could have scored on the first play, but held up at third, but he made the A’s pay on the second attempt, scoring easily.

1. SODO Mojo only for M’s

The Mariners are doing their best balk imitation at the proposed new multi-purpose arena site in SODO. They are claiming that traffic would be a problem with an additional 20,000 fans coming to the area for games.

Like Seattleites aren’t used to bad traffic anyways. C’mon Mariners.

I love you dearly, but just admit it that you are afraid of losing more fans to a better product. It’s not the fans fault that ownership runs the team like a manager for a special Olympics basketball team.

Put a quality product on the field, and the fans will be back.

Nobody likes to spend money on watching their team lose.

They can do that for free at home on TV!
