2012 MLB Baseball Betting: Seattle Mariners Futures Odds

MLB Odds

Oddmakers are not giving the Mariners much of a chance to make any noise in the upcoming season, as they are at 125/1 to win the World Series and have the worst MLB odds (80/1) to win the American League pennant.

Last season the Mariners had the 2nd worst record in the American League and the 4th worst record in the Majors. They finished 29 games back of the Rangers in the AL West and they had the worst road record in the AL.

On top of that they were 6 games under .500 at home.

Seattle’s offense was terrible last season, as they ranked 30th in the Majors in runs scored, batting average, and on base percentage.

The Seattle Mariners have made plans to move Ichiro Suzuki out of the leadoff spot and he struggled last season at the plate only batting .272. One thing the Mariners really need to add to their lineup is some more pop.

Miguel Olivo missed 32 games last season and still led the team in HR (19) and RBI (62).

The M’s only had 3 players hit in double-digits in HR with Olivo, Justin Smoak (15), and Mike Carp (12). Seattle needs to make some moves to improve their lineup and if they do not their pitching staff will need to have a stellar season to make it out of the AL West.

The one deal that the Seattle Mariners pulled the trigger on was sending starting pitcher Michael Pineda (9-10 3.74 ERA) to the Yankees for ultra-talented Jesus Montero, who hit .328 with 4 HR and 28 RBI in only 18 games.

He is a catcher, but has issues with his defense and may DH this season. No matter where he plays he will have to give the Mariners some offense.

The Mariners ranked a respectable 15th in the Majors last season in team ERA led by former Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez, who was 14-14 with a 3.47 ERA.

He had a good year and his record reflects the fact he did not get much run support.

The M’s signed Japanese pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma and LHP Jason Vargas and young prospects Charlie Furbush and Blake Beavan will likely round out the rotation.

Seattle locked up All Star closer Brandon League with a 1-year contract, but unless the offense plays much better than last season he will not have a ton of chances to save games.

The Mariners have a lot of young talent and the young guys need to step up, especially on offense. I do not see Seattle making the playoffs last season of even playing to a .500 record.

However, if the M’s can make some solid off-season additions and the young guys step up Seattle may surprise some people next season.
