Looking Ahead: Angels vs. Mariners series preview

36 to go

It’s hard to believe, but the Seattle Mariners have just 36 games remaining in their 2013 campaign. What seems to have started just yesterday is now coming to a close. It’s been an up-and-down year for the boys from the Emerald City, with tough streaks at the beginning of the year mitigated by an impressive July, but they still have a chance to make up some ground and really prove their worth in the coming month and change.

Currently eight games under the .500 mark, the Mariners will need to go 22-14 in their remaining contests to reach that mark.

Not an impossible goal, but it will be rather tough to achieve. Based on their last road trip, however, it does appear as though the Mariners still have plenty of fight in them. Their toughest trip this year, Seattle went an impressive 5-4 and took 2-of-3 from the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics with some timely hitting and key pitching.

Looking ahead, the Mariners will now take on the Angels at home for a three game set that should see the return of Eric Wedge to the clubhouse.

Here’s a brief preview of the upcoming action.

King’s Court will be back in session when Felix Hernandez takes the mound to dazzle Seattle fans and the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Though there will definitely be some in attendance checking the score of the Seahawks‘ contest throughout the game, it’d be a shame to take your eyes off Felix as he prepares for the final run towards a Cy Young Award.

Getting the start for the Angels will be Garrett Richards, who has seen action against the Mariners but has yet to make a start against them this year. Recently being moved from the bullpen, it’ll be interesting to see if Richards will be able to compete against Hernandez for a win on Friday night.

Will Felix reign supreme against the Angels?

Will Felix reign supreme against the Angels?

Look for him to see about 5 innings of action before being pulled for a long reliever.

Erasmo Ramirez, who was impressive on the road for Seattle, will look for another win on Saturday as he faces the Angels and former Mariners, Jason Vargas. Ramirez has really developed in his past two starts, throwing smarter pitches while going with what works on that given day.

Look for him to make a few mistakes against a potent Angels offense but come out relatively OK.

Vargas, on the other hand, will be looking to show his former team he still has a more than impressive repertoire of pitches in his arsenal. It’ll be great to see him in action at Safeco once again.

Once again Aaron Harang is penciled in for the start in this one, but I’m really hoping Wedge and Z will move him before the game and bring up one of the younger guys in AAA.  I haven’t been shy to voice my displeasure with Harang, and I really don’t think I can stand watching him attempt to sling the ball on the hill anymore.

He’s not good and frustrating to watch. Knowing he’s on the mound lessens the chances of Seattle coming away with a win.

Jered Weaver will have the treat of opposing Harang on the mound, and has been so-so in 2013. He has a 7-7 record with a 3.62 ERA and clearly can still dominate opposing batters.

Based on the struggles the Angels have had this year, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Mariners take 2-of-3 from the Halos while inching towards .500 as well.
