Kansas City Royals vs Seattle Mariners
Friday July 27
Safeco Field – Seattle, WA
Moneyline: Seattle -125, Kansas City +115
PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (0-1, 9.00 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Blake Beavan (5-6, 5.54)
Nothing has really gone right for Kansas City this season…other than Minnesota being just a little bit worse than they are.
The Royals are playing out the string hoping some of their key performers might rebuild the hope that they entered 2012 with. Their pitching is brutal, especially the starting staff which is second worst in the Majors in quality starts.
But what can you expect when you pin your hopes on guys like Jonathan Sanchez.
Things may not be much better now that they have traded Sanchez for starter Jeremy Guthrie. Guthrie has never been a Cy Young candidate but with the Orioles in the big bad AL East he was able to hold his own.
This year in Colorado he was an outright disaster, one of the reason the Rockies went with their cockamamie pitching strategy.
Unfortunately in his one start with the Royals has he has been equally bad. His ERA for the year is a whopping 6.49.
The Mariners are 2-2 PI (post Ichiro) and evened their record with a victory in the series opener Monday night against KC.
This team is definitely going to struggle to score runs but is better than you think at preventing them (13th).
For what it is worth, they are also a strong defensive team (3rd in errors). In most situations this is a hard team to back but there is decent value against KC.
Since being recalled from the Minors Blake Beavan is 2-0 and he is coming off his best start of the season last time out against Tampa. The right-hander beat the Royals on July 17 despite allowing five runs and seven hits over six innings of a 9-6 win.
He is only 23 and he may have been a little unlucky with his hit rate given that he has decent stuff and good control – more than 3Ks ber BB. Dealing against the Royals is a nice chance to improve that confidence, especially at home.
Beavan is a 6’7” hurler so the dominance might be there.
O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Seattle 4 – Kansas City 3
