Good first night back for Gutierrez
Hopefully this move sparks the Mariners into a early summer win streak. They sure could use one moving into the second week of inter-league play.
Gutierrez reached base three times in his first game of the season, including an RBI single in the 8th to score Justin Smoak. This is nothing more than a feel good play of the week, as the play had no effect whatsoever on the game.
With a 3-1 hitters count, and runners at the corners, Franklin Gutierrez kept his head down on the fast ball and laced it into the hole at short stop.
As the video shows the slo-mo replay, it looks like Guti hasn’t missed a beat from the reliable hitter we saw a few seasons back. Hopefully he is ready to get back to playing ball full time for the Mariners, and leave the past year and a half behind him for good.
The slo-mo replay
As the pitch was on its way, Guti picked it up early enough as a ball he could turn on.
With his weight on his back foot, he twisted his hips and got his hands through the strike zone quick enough to get good wood on the ball.
As he strikes the ball with the sweet part of the bat, you can see that he makes contact about a foot and a half in front of the plate, perfect timing to pull the ball to the left side of the diamond.
Smoak scores easily
This was an all or nothing type of hit.
If it gets through the infield, Justin Smoak scores no problem, if it’s gobbled up by the short stop, it could be the third out with a force at second.
Gutierrez has speed, but with John Jaso at first, the force at second would be inevitable.
Good job by Guti to get just the right amount of pull on the ball to find the hole and pick up his first of many (hopefully) RBI’s on the year.
