Did we see a glimpse of the future?
Welcome to the tenth edition of the State of the Seattle Mariners update for the 2012 regular season. In these weekly updates you will find all the information and news regarding the Mariners Baseball Franchise.
Upcoming Match Ups
The M’s will be splitting Los Angeles this week with a 3 game set against the Angels before returning home to face the newly purchased Dodgers. Both of these series are likely to be a substantial challenge to the young M’s team.
The M’s went 3-3 for the week with a much deserved day off on Thursday after a 21-8 victory of the reigning American League champion, Texas Rangers. Even in their losses, the M’s offense really looked quite good this week, but the bullpen really struggled.
The Good News
Justin is Smoakin. Justin Smoak had a career game against Texas with 2 home runs and 6 RBI’s. He is in a grove right now that really gives the fans a taste of why he was the central piece of the Cliff Lee deal in 2010.
Stephen Pryor. Pryor made an impressive debut in the Major Leagues with his 100 MPH fastball. While his control is still under development, the M’s may have found a new solution for a closer if they can deal Brandon League before the trade deadline.
Brendan Ryan. Ryan was named defensive player of the month by ESPN and is considered by most to be the best defensive short stop in the game. While his bat is as limp as a garden hose right now, his glove is looking golden.
Maybe he should try hitting with it.
No sooner had Ichrio Suzuki been given his lead off spot back and he pounds out 2 home runs in one game.
Why couldn’t he do that in the three hole?
The Bad News
The Bull Pen. Pryor is great, but his presence this early in the season chalks up some real concerns over the Mariner’s pen. One lowlight is Hisashi Iwakuma who cannot seem to make the transition to MLB nor to being a reliever.
Roster Moves / Trades
The M’s exchanged Steves on their 25 man roster this week with Steve Delabar heading to Tacoma and Pryor being promoted to the big leagues.
Felix Hernandez is being treated for a stiff back and may miss a start or be placed on the 15 disabled list after a disappointing outing in his last start.
M’s in the Community
Felix purchased 100 tickets for local kids to come out and enjoy a game against the Dodgers and get a King Felix bobblehead doll.
What a great guy.
The 2012 MLB draft starts today and many are speculating as to how the M’s will use their number 3 pick. Most of the talk centers around a young Florida Gators catcher named Mike Zunino.
Some may balk at the idea of the M’s taking a catcher with Seattle making the big trade in the offseason for Jesus Montero.
However if Montero turns out to be the hitter that he is projected to be, he can’t stay behind the plate risking an injury like what Buster Posey faced in 2011.
The M’s need him in the line up for the long haul.
However, catchers are always risky picks and the M’s are always good for a surprise when it comes to the draft.
