Twins vs. Mariners in Seattle: Pitching, series preview, analysis & predictions

Staying perfect?

August 17-19
It is tough to follow perfection, but that is exactly what the Seattle Mariners will try to do from now on.

Pitching match ups:

Game 120: RHP – Nick Blackburn vs. RHP – Hisashi Iwakuma

Nick Blackburn struggled against Seattle in his last visit to Safeco Field giving up 5 runs to Mariners hitters in 6 innings. He hasn’t played much better since. Good news for the M’s.
  • Current Line: 4-8 / 7.33 ERA / 25 BB / 41 SO / 1.68 WHIP
Iwakuma continues to impress in the starting rotation and is making a bid for a spot next season.
Hisashi Iwakuma, Seattle Mariners
  • Current Line: 3-3 / 4.16 ERA / 31 BB / 58 SO / 1.37 WHIP
  • Iwakuma has never faced the Twins before

Game 121: LHP – Scott Diamond vs. LHP – Jason Vargas

Diamond has pitched well this season and the Marinera may have trouble against the southpaw if they can’t get to him early they may not score at all.

  • Current line: 10-5 / 2.97 ERA / 17 BB / 68 SO / 1.19 WHIP.

Vargas is in line for the next Mariner perfecto. In his last 8 outings he is 6-1 with a 1.67 ERA.  No pressure though

  • Current Line: 13-8 / 3.56 ERA / 43 BB / 107 SO / 1.13 WHIP

Game 122:  RHP – Samuel Deduno vs. RHP – Blake Beavan

Samuel Deduno isn’t terrible, but h had some control issues that make him vulnerable to perspective hitters.  Of course he has only pitched 7 games this season.  The Mariners have a good chance on this match up.
  • Current Line: 4-0 / 3.38 ERA / 30 BB / 28 SO / 1.55 WHIP
Beavan is a good pitcher, he can win this one hands down.
  • Current Line: 7-7 / 5.17  ERA / 13 BB /  54 SO / 1.24 WHIP

Twins vs. Mariners Series Predictions

Game 1: Win (Twins 2 – Mariners 4)

Game 2: Loss (Twins 2 – Mariners 1)

Game 3: Win (Twins 2 – Mariners 3)

Notes

If you live under a rock, Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game earlier this week. It’s the third of the season and 23rd in MLB history. He won’t pitch in this series, but it is still beyond news-worthy.

John Jaso has reached base safely in his last 11 games.
