BC Lions’ 2000 Grey Cup Run

Great Northwest Sports Moments – 2000 B.C. Lions

The British Columbia Lions have had a flair for the dramatic over the years in the Canadian Football League.

It seems they only know how to win the Grey Cup in one fashion: heart-stopping.

Damon Allen Led The 2000 BC Lions To The Grey Cup Championship!

Every BC Lions Grey Cup involved either a nailbiter of a game, close calls leading up to the final game, or both. The Lions’ 2000 victory is the perfect example.

Based on how up and down the 2000 season was, most Lions fans never predicted it would end with their team hoisting the Grey Cup. The Lions lost four straight games at one point; coach Greg Mohns resigned to join the XFL (gross).

At Thanksgiving, this team was hanging by a thread at just 5-9 on the year.

However, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. The Lions won three of their final four games to finish at 8-10.

Quarterback Damon Allen found his groove. The Lions shocked Edmonton in the Western Semi-final with a 34-32 victory capped by Lui Passaglia’s last-second field goal.

They tossed Calgary side in the Western Final to set up a battle with the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup.

Not surprisingly, the Cardiac Kids routine continued and BC found itself in another nailbiter. Led by Robert Drummond, who ripped off 122 rushing yards on just 10 carries, the Lions slipped by with a 28-26 victory.

Drummond was awarded the game’s most valuable player and Sean Millington received the game’s most valuable Canadian.

It was Passaglia’s final CFL game and it made the Lions the first team in CFL history to win the Grey Cup despite posting a losing regular-season record.

The BC Lions were a Cinderella team to remember in 2000! ( The Lions, who finished 8-10 with an overtime loss during the regular season, became the first team ever to finish with a regular season record below .500 and win the Grey Cup.)
