SHOW HIM DA MONEY!!!!!!!!
It’s not nearly the paycheck that a NFL starting QB would receive……heck it isn’t even the annual salary of a clipboard carrying NFL backup QB, but for CFL fans, last week, the BC Lions officially announced that they will retain Travis Lulay through the 2013 season, thanks to a $300,000 contract extension.
A hybrid of Dave Dickenson and Casey Printers, Lulay turned a 1-6 start to the 2011 season into the Leos sixth Grey Cup.
Locking up Lulay for two more seasons means that the Oregon native will not be able to explore NFL options in the near future, something that had fans wondering if the red headed pivot would make a run for the border after last season.
The $300,000 paycheck does not make Lulay the highest paid QB in the league, a honor that belongs to Anthony Calvillo and Ricky Ray and while it is not a long term contract, Wally Buono is committed to making the 2011 CFL’s Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MVP the focal point of the Lions playbook.
After locking up Lulay’s favorite targets; Geroy Simon, Arland Bruce and Korey Banks earlier in the offseason, the Leos will be looking to use some of the money that was saved on Lulay’s team friendly contract to sign Shawn Gore and Akeem Foster.
While the NFL may have a greater pasture to offer Travis Lulay, it may not be greener, as the last Lion QB to travel south found out.
Sure there are plenty of NFL clubs that could use a quality back up QB and some that may even need a starting one, but those clubs are tabbing Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III for their future.
For Lulay though, who has built a home and a community following in the Lower Mainland, the opportunity to capture another Grey Cup and highlight his resume with additional award winning hardware was too attractive.
Besides, do you think that Lulay would really want to watch someone else hit Superman Simon for his record breaking catch in the first game of the season and miss out on the opportunity to bring home the first back to back Grey Cup banners in Lions history?
