Nice Move Champs!
The B.C. Lions 2011 Grey Cup Champions have extended a vital piece of their championship team. Andrew Harris, the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Canadian, signed a contract extension that will see him in the orange and black for at least another few seasons.
“Andrew proved last season that he can be an explosive part of our offence and a big key to our overall success,” Lions head coach Mike Benevides said in a statement.
“I am very pleased to have him part of our team moving forward and I believe he will continue to grow as a player.”
Harris, originally a Vancouver Island junior star, has played the past two seasons with the Lions. In the Grey Cup he ran ten times for 65 yards and one touchdown. Throughout the season he also contributed as a reciever and a strong member of the special teams squad.
A good move
Although the full details of the extension are not yet availabe, this is a good move for both parties. Harris gets to play in a system where he has thrived with a team that has every reason to expect a strong season next year.
The Lions keep a versatile player who fills one of their designated Canadian spots and can continue to develop on the field.
Don’t look for Harris to have a monster season next year, this team will feature a lot more passing than running.
But expect his numbers to improve in all areas, especially on special teams where he can be a lot of trouble for kicking teams.
By the sounds of it he’s raring to get going in 2012.
“It’s been a tremendous year and I really couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said. “Getting an opportunity on offence this season and having everything go the way it did was a dream come true.
“To extend my time with the Lions is icing on the cake and I can’t wait to get back on the field in 2012.”
