Canucks make restricted free agents qualifying offers today
First we got NHL preseason schedule news from the Canucks on a busy Monday, now we're hearing via several news outlets (CKWX 1130, The Province, Team1040 etc) that the Canucks have made qualifying offers to 3 restricted free agents.
The list does include possible new NUMBER 1 goalie Cory Schneider.
Laurence Gilman confirmed the offers to Schneider.
“Today we made qualifying offers to three players,” said Gilman. “Whether we tender qualifying offers to other players will be bourne out between now and the window (to make qualifying offers) closing next Monday.”
The obvious most high profile name today. He just finished a two-year deal that paid him $900k in 2011/12, per contract rules in the NHL this offer must include a 5% raise.
Qualifying offers allow the team to keep the players negotiating rights.
Quote:
Per the province. There are a number of scenarios that may unfold around RFAs who receive qualifying offers: a) The player can sign the offer and play out that contact; b) The player can choose not to sign it if he feels he is worth more and take the team to salary arbitration, which must be filed by July 5; c) The player can choose not to sign it and be tendered an offer sheet by another NHL club, which must happen between July 1 and July 5; d) The player can choose not to sign the qualifying offer and sit out.
The other names we've learned today are seldom used winger Dale Weise and Swedish minor league goalie Eddie Lack.
Canucks RFA's yet to receive a qualifying offer are: Marc-Andre Gragnani, Ryan Parent, Victor Oreskovich and Mike Duco.
