Northwest Sports – Seattle Offense Taking Shape In OTAs

While readers of NHL blogs (which you can find here) are getting ready for the Stanley Cup finals between Los Angeles and New Jersey, teams in the NFL are starting their OTAs when players get together for the first team and new guys are meeting their teammates for the first time officially as well.

The Seattle offense struggled last year, but this year, things could be different.

A few BetOnline.com reviews of last season would point specifically to their struggles at quarterback, and the Seahawks looked to rectify that by signing Matt Flynn to a deal in which he received $10m guaranteed, which means that he would have had to really throw away the job to not open the season as the starter.

But so far, reports are surfacing that Flynn is, by far, the best quarterback in Seattle right now and even though his competition is the much-maligned Tarvaris Jackson and rookie Russell Wilson, it has to be a good sign that people think so highly of Flynn, who put up some solid numbers when he got a chance to play in Green Bay.

But Flynn will need some help and Seattle’s receivers were terrible last season. Sidney Rice and Mike Williams were hurt, and both have motivation to get better because head coach Pete Carroll has them on a short leash, especially Williams, who played for Carroll under USC, but reverted to some of his old habits and he got lazy after a successful 2010.

Williams is still recovering from leg injuries and isn’t taking part in OTAs, but he’ll have to get ready soon as his $3 million salary makes him an easy target to get cut. Rice, who has an ailing shoulder, is taking part in non-contact drills, but the Seahawks figure he’ll be 100% by the time camp rolls around and the deep threat will be an important part of their online sports betting odds.

Also, the offensive line will be getting a couple of players back as well as tackle Russell Okung is almost ready to come back from a pectoral problem, and John Moffitt’s knee is pretty much healed as he took part in drills and didn’t look like he was even hurt.

The line is going to crucial for the Seahawks as Flynn is going to need time to find his targets (which also includes newly-acquired tight end Kellen Winslow), and running back Marshawn Lynch will need holes to run through.
