NCAA football fans may be more used to watching these two schools go at it on the football field, but on Thursday, Stanford heads to Oregon for a hoops contest as they look to stretch their record to 3-0 in the Pac-12.

Oregon should be the favorites at home, where they are 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS in their last five against the Cardinal, with four of the last five coming in under the posted total. Stanford’s offense is moving well right now as they pass the ball around and get good shots, but their defense is also coming together as the Cardinal are 13^th in the country in points allowed. They’re also 16^th in the NCAA in rebounding margin and they may be too much for Oregon to handle, even at home.

Stanford is off to an unexpectedly good start this season. They are 12-2 including a 2-0 start to conference play after beating visiting UCLA and USC last week.

This team doesn’t have elite talent but with the consistency they have shown they might be a factor. Thus far they have been a very effective defensive team that has a knack for hitting the offensive boards. If you are effective in those areas you can definitely steal some wins.


What the Cardinal really lack though is that elite talent that they can rely on in close games. Their leading scorer and rebounder is forward Josh Owens. He is a nice player and any coach would love him, but he can not create much all by his lonesome.

One thing that does keep Stanford in games is that they convert at the free throw line. In last week’s two close victories they converted at 85%.


The Ducks split their first two conference games, proving their mediocrity by beating Washington State but being handled easily by Washington.

They may have 10 wins but in my opinion they really haven’t beaten anybody yet, WSU is the only team in the Kenpom top 100 if you are into those kind of statistic based rankings. KP has them seventh in the PAC 12 right now and that is about where they should stay all season. This weekend will be tough as California follows their travel partner Stanford into town.


The Ducks may have been winning games but this team is hard to read from Vegas’ perspective with just a 3-8 ATS record.

Against Washington leading scorer Devoe Joseph disappeared with just 4 points.

This team is not very deep they need to get a lot of production from their starters to compete.
