2011 Boeing Classic Preview

Champions Tour: Fred Couples aims for hometown victory at Boeing Classic

There’s a buzz around the Champions Tour’s Boeing Classic this week in the Seattle area. It’s no wonder, as hometown hero Fred Couples, who grew up in Seattle, is intent on winning.

Returning from his usual nagging back injury, he won the Senior Players Championship last week.

So it looks like Couples is peaking just in time.

Let’s look at five golfers who could challenge for the Boeing Classic this week.

1. Fred Couples: Reportedly, his back treatment went extremely well and he feels better than he has in years. We all know what can happen when he gets hot, all he does in WIN tournaments.

So he has a great shot and the extra motivation of playing at home.

2. Bernard Langer: The defending Boeing Classic champ gained momentum with a 66 and a 67 on the weekend at Westchester last week.

3. John Cook: He lost the Senior Players to Couples in a three-hole playoff and could be hungry for revenge.

4. Tom Lehman: After finishing fourth at the Senior Players, he stretched his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings to 565 points over Peter Senior (yep, that’s his last name).

5. Mark O’Meara: He followed up his 2010 Senior Players win with a fifth-place last week and enters Seattle with three straight top-six finishes.

Time will tell if Couples’ back – not to mention an aching hip – will hold up in Seattle this week.

But, considering he lasted 75 holes last week to win, the prognosis has to be good.

Something tells me the roar of his hometown fans will be the best painkiller possible.

Side Note:

Victoria BC’s Jim Rutledge will be in the field this week as well. Coming off a 32nd place showing in last week’s Senior Championship.

Jim is currently 45th on the Senior Tour money list and has won himself $245,000 this year.

He has two top 10’s, and his best finish was a Tie 6th in the Allianz Championship in February. A $64,000 payday.
