Seattle Mist Anyone?
Pigskin fans in the Northwest corner of the United States have had little to cheer about over the past couple years, as not since the four year run of NFC West division championships by the Seahawks has football been prominent in the 206.
Yes, last year the Seahawks captured the NFC West division crown and had an upset victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints in the first round, but it was with a losing record and lets be frank, the other three teams in the pack also had a pretty crappy season, leading to the Seahawks being the best of the worst. This year, the Hawks are not fairing that much better with an 0-2 start.
So what is a pro football fan to do? Welcome the Seattle Mist!
The Seattle who? Entering their third season in the Lingerie Football Leaguein 2011-12, the Mist kicked off their inaugural season in 2009-10 with a 3-1 regular season record, only to fall short of the playoff tiebreaker. With a successful maidan voyage, hopes for a playoff run were high in 2010-2011, however a 0-3 start to the season quickly dashed any post season thoughts.
With the Mist completely out of the playoff chase, their fourth and final game of the regular season against the Dallas Desire was cancelled due a combination of unsafe weather conditions and risk of injury in a meaningless game (what could be the first time in pro sports that a game was cancelled due to prevention of a broken nail).
With the Seahawks kicking off the 2011-12 season 0-2, the Mist will open their campaign with a road trip to Green Bay to take on the Chill, Friday September 30th, before heading back to the Emerald City for their home opener on October 4th. Unfamiliar with the Mist roster and the LFL setup, don’t worry, not many people can say they are!
With twelve teams planted throughout North America, (including the Toronto Triumph), the ladies league features a 7 on 7 lineup on a 50 yard field, playing two seventeen minute halves (nice round number!).
The offensive line sets up with a QB, a center, two running backs and three receivers.
What would make fans want to support these ladies, when for years, Powder Puff games were void of followers? How about a uniform that would make Victoria Secret proud! Aside from the helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads and knee pads, the ladies rock a team colored sports bra and panties, with a garter thrown in for added flavor.
While jokes of “tight ends” are plentiful, these ladies can actually play, and play hard! Second year QB Angela Rypien, the daughter of former Washington State and NFL star Mark Rypien returns to help lead the team to the promise land, while league All-Stars, Kam Warner (RB/LB), Amanda Brace and Jessica Hopkins ( both WR/S) bring the star power and leadership to a club looking to represent the Western Conference at the Lingerie Bowl on February 5th in Indianapolis.
Regardless of your reason or reasons for checking out the LFL, trust in the fact that these ladies are playing for real, and if you think it is a joke, I dare you to tell one of them………chances are they will knock you on your ass!
