From Abbotsford to Rocky Mountain High

David Van Der Gulik is yet another in a long line of West Coast Canadians currently playing for the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL. Born in Abbotsford, British Columbia on April 20, 1983, Van Der Gulik started and developed quickly playing in and around BC’s Fraser Valley.

Van Der Gulik played three years with the Chilliwack Chiefs (1999-2002) of the BCHL where he amassed a very impressive 261 points – his third year generated 100 points in 56 games.

Van Der Gulik’s solid Junior career led to his selection by the Calgary Flames in seventh round (206th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2002 entry draft.

Van Der Gulik would follow the path of many Canadian players – he accepted a scholarship to Boston University where he would play four years and collect 93 points.

He would make himself known in the college ranks as he was named to the East All-Rookie Team in 2003 and was named to Boston University’s All Decade Team after his injury plagued senior season.

Van Der Gulik in Avs Action

After a stellar college career, David Van Der Gulik signed a two year entry level contract on May 22, 2006 with the team that drafted him; the Calgary Flames.

He attended training camp with the team that year but was sent to Calgary’s AHL affiliate in Omaha where he collected 16 goals and 27 assists in 80 games.

Van Der Gulik set an impressive franchise record that year with a Plus/minus rating of +27!

The 2007-2008 season was another one spent in the minor leagues – this time with Quad City where he once again led the team in Plus/minus while registering 42 points. The Flames awarded Van Der Gulik with a contract extension but still held him back with their AHL affiliate.

Van Der Gulik started the 2008-2009 season with Quad City but was called up on February 26th, 2009.

He would make his NHL debut and make somewhat of a statement. Van Der Gulik recorded his first point a week later against Ottawa, play six games for the Flames and record two assists.

Van Der Gulik would return home in the 2009-2010 season. No, not to the Canucks but to Calgary’s new AHL affiliate the Abbotsford Heat where he recorded 40 points.

After failing to catch on and stay with the Flames, David Van Der Gulik signed a free agent contract with the Colorado Avalanche on July 2, 2010 but was assigned to the Avs AHL affiliate; the Lake Erie Monsters where he would play the bulk of the season.

Van Der Gulik continues to be a strong two-way player that jumps up and down from the Bigs to the minors.
