Washington has been playing very well so far this season – they won their first seven games before losing 2-1 in Edmonton in a game that they outshot the Oilers 35-19. They did take an uncharacteristic nine penalties – penalties that resulted in both Oilers goals. Vancouver on the other hand has not been playing well to start their campaign – two straight losses have the team in unfamiliar territory – below .500 and down the Western Conference standings.

Washington’s early season success has been the result of the whole team contributing. 14 different players have scored so far making them the highest scoring team in the NHL (3.67 goals per game). Thomas Vokoun has also been very good so far. He has a .940 save percentage and 1.83 goals against average. Washington has been solid offensively and defensively all season and will be a very stiff test for the Canucks on Saturday night.

Capitals vs. Canucks Betting & Handicapping Preview

Vancouver is scuffling. Besides the Sedins, everyone else on the team has been very slow out of the gate. Henrik and Daniel have combined for seven goals and 23 points so far while everyone else has struggled on the offense zone – Wednesday’s 3-0 home loss against the Blues is just another example of this fact! The Canucks pride themselves on depth but have been unable to back up pride with results.

Roberto Luongo could get back to action on Saturday night after Corey Schneider played in the last two games. Lou allowed at least three goals in five of his six appearances, and his .868 save percentage – Yuk! Early season struggles are nothing new to Luongo however – in 2009 he started 2-4 with a 3.90 goals against average and a .860 save percentage.

Dave B’s NHL Free Betting Prediction

Washington is 1-7 in the last 8 meetings and hasn’t won in Vancouver since Feb. 14, 2001. They will likely be without their top defenseman Mike Green for the contest however. All signs point to a Canucks victory – right? Not necessarily. The Caps, with a couple of bounces could easily have won on Thursday night in Edmonton – they would have been undefeated on the season. Washington’s only kryptonite was a hot goaltender! Vancouver certainly doesn’t own one of those!

There are few teams in the NHL that can match Vancouver’s talent and depth at forward – Washington is one of them. With Vancouver’s defense and goaltending struggling mightily, expect the Caps to bounce back and to gain a rare win in Vancouver. Saturday’s game may be just what the Canucks need – a good measuring stick against one of the true elite teams in the NHL.
