The Philadelphia Flyers will play their home opener on Wednesday night against a team that is playing the second of a four game road trip, the Vancouver Canucks.

Over/Under: 5.5 goals

Both teams are expected to challenge for the Stanley Cup this season with one team returning largely the same lineup from last year and the other icing a totally revamped roster.

Vancouver got their first win of the season on Monday as they used strong goaltending from backup Corey Schneider to post a win in Columbus.

Roberto Luongo, who appeared to struggle in Vancouver’s first game, will likely get the nod on Wednesday however. Vancouver will be without the services of Ryan Kesler on Wednesday although he is close to coming back for the Canucks, and Mayson Raymond who is still a ways away from returning to the club.

Their presence will certainly be missed. But Vancouver’s vaunted top line has looked sharp so far this season and the club has been getting some timely goals from a few of their role players.

No Jeff Carter, no Mike Richards – no problem for the Philadelphia Flyers who have started 2-0 with wins over Boston and New Jersey so far.

New acquisitions have played a big part in their success early in the season – Ilya Bryzgalov posted a shutout against the Devils and Wayne Simmonds has a goal and an assist so far with a team-high seven shots on goal.

Roberto Luongo

Roberto Luongo will likely get the nod on Wednesday vs. Phili

Claude Giroux has represented himself well so far as the Flyers top weapon – he has a goal in each of the Flyers first two games.

Betting Prediction: The Canucks have won two straight against the Flyers, and are unbeaten in Philadelphia since losing in overtime there Nov. 13, 2003.

Overall however, the Canucks have won just five of their past 16 matchups with the Flyers.

It will be Vancouver’s second marquee matchup of the season on Wednesday – the first being a loss against Pittsburgh in their opener. With solid goaltending and four lines that are contributing minutes and points, expect the Flyers to emerge victorious in their home opener.

Vancouver will be a test but I like the home team to prevail in front of an amped crowd.
