Vancouver, fresh off a 5-4 loss in Philadelphia last night will likely be road weary playing their third game of a four game road trip while the Wings should be fresh not having played since Saturday.
Vancouver has been plagued by slow starts so far this season. Vancouver has given up the first goal in all three games so far and have taken at least three penalties in the first period of each game thus far – something that is going to have to change if the Canucks hope to improve.
The high priced talent has been good and bad so far – the Sedins have nine points combined in three games while Roberto Luongo has looked shaky at best in allowing eight goals in his first two starts.
Detroit has had a typically strong start to their season thus far. They come into Thursday’s game having won both of their games this season and anxious to get back on the ice after four days away from game action.
Pavel Datsyuk has started quickly and leads the team with three points while each goaltender looked solid in their starts this season. We all know that Detroit is a tough combatant, particularly at home.
Vancouver may start Corey Schneider in goal on Thursday and that will be a good thing – he has looked better than Lou early this season and it may force the shaky defense in front of him may tighten up. Keep in mind that Vancouver is still not quite at full strength.
Ryan Kesler and Mayson Raymond are still out of the lineup.
The fact remains that to beat the Wings; it is almost paramount that a team is at full strength. Sloppy play, injured players and the fact that Vancouver will be playing its third game in four nights on the road will be factors in this game for sure.
One thing is certain – Vancouver is being tested early this season!
Pick: Detroit Red Wings -140
