Canucks: Ryan Kesler recovering from hip surgery quicker than expected

NHL Injury Update:

Given that he’s enough of a physical specimen to appear nude in ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Ryan Kesler is a quick healer.

After having surgery to repair a torn hip labrum this offseason, the Canucks’ second-line center has been cleared for contact.

Earlier reports suggested he’d miss about a month of the season but it looks like Kesler will be back much sooner.

Last week, he was cleared for contact.

He had the same injury and same surgery in 2007 and missed 72 days before returning for the playoffs.

It’s been just a little bit longer than that time frame this time around but, since the playoffs aren’t looming, there isn’t the same urgency.

Odds are, Kesler will return in roughly two weeks.

If (a) Cody Hodgson flourishes with extra minutes in the meantime and (b) the Canucks win enough games, Vancouver probably won’t rush its 41-goal scorer back and may wait three weeks.

If they struggle out of the gate, however, the Canucks may try to get Kesler back in there by mid-to-late October.
