Flying V’s Hat Trick: Canucks embarrass Maple Leafs on Saturday night

We Are All Owners Of The Leafs

The Vancouver Canucks rode the return of the Sedins to the score sheet on their way to a comfortable 6-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Alex Burrows broke open the scoring and Manny Malhotra added a highlight reel effort in the first period to topple Toronto in convincing fashion.

The Hat Trick

Burrows’ Beef

Alex Burrows made it perfectly clear he loathed the Leafs heading into Saturday’s showdown with Toronto, and used that motivation to massacre the opposition on Hockey Night in Canada.

Burrows had two goals against Toronto on Vancouver’s top line, sticking it to his boyhood rivals as well as Ron Mclean who was forced to praise the talented agitator.

Burrows buried a velvet-soft saucer pass from Daniel Sedin to open the scoring Saturday and converted another opportunity early in the second period, snapping a perfectly placed shot past James Reimer.

Malhotra Magic

Manny Malhotra made the most of rare ice time in the offensive zone Saturday against the Leafs, making a diving tip on Maxim Lapierre’s saucer pass to extend Vancouver’s firs period lead. Malhotra’s highlight reel goal was especially impressive considering Alain Vigneault’s near-exclusive utilization of the center in the defensive zone.

The faceoff ace managed three shots on net and an epic goal in 12 minutes of ice time on Saturday.

Sudden Sedinery

Daniel and Henrik Sedin rode a three-game scoring drought heading into Saturday’s game against the Leafs but broke through in a big way on the CBC’s big stage.

The twins had the puck on a string all night, tallying four points each in a classic passing clinic around the intimidated Toronto defence. If the Canucks can win without the Sedins producing, imagine what the team is capable of down the stretch if the tandem settle into their regular rhythm.

V’s Thoughts

On a night when the Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin were due to score the Canucks capitalized on a lacking blue line to beat down James Reimer and the Maple Leafs. The visitors simply couldn’t stop the Sedins from attacking the net all night, leading to the use of both Leaf goaltenders on Saturday.

The loss was hardly James Reimer’s fault for the Leafs who were obviously outclassed from outside the crease.

Quote

“The last time the Leafs won in this building, Brian Burke was the General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks.” Glenn Healy summed up another sour night for the Maple Leafs.

The Leafs were getting killed by the transition game all night long. They just can’t skate with puck possession teams. There’s still a lot of work left to be done in Toronto, they’re lucky the eighth spot in the East is so easy to hold on to.
